Raymarine, Fareham, UK 2016 – 2022 Senior Hardware Design Engineer

Developed Award-Winning YACHTSENSE (Modular) digital control system from first concept; collaborating with a limited development team, whilst working remotely. Devised fast-acting HW/SW protection measures to ensure operation of the switching modules remained reliable and safe. Re factored C++ code to improve runtime speed, which eliminated over-run on STM32F0 HW. Organized EMC and vibration testing and implemented HW & SW changes to resolve issues found during testing.

Developed multi-channel modules including Quad 10A, Dual 20A, 20A Reversible, Resp. for both HW & SW.

Planned, devised and conducted full pre-release system testing of each of the modules. 

Enabled auto-detection of types and order of modules by developing module detection protocol and hardware signalling.

I²t Software Fusing algorithm developed to match circuit breaker response.
 

Developed 2 processor generations of the AXIOM Family (Multi-Function Display) from conception to completion; collaborating with a multi-discipline team.

Identified defects in design causing Android system crashes, through collaborating with SOC vendor and performing extensive stress and thermal performance testing. Developed and optimized SOC / System: Power on, Power off, WOL, Sleep and Reset strategy. Used supervisor microcontroller ATMEL (ARM32 Cortex-M0+) to control these functions. Implemented analogue comparator device driver to enable quick recovery from power supply brownouts.

Established Android App (APK) for stress test, which enabled concurrent high processor (CPUs + GPU) load.

Extensive thermal testing, and calculations. Recommended to management, the need for improved heatsink. Tuned the Power Allocators parameters to keep the RK3399 die within thermal limits. Full outcome was 33% faster CPU/GPU/DDR operation, whilst maintaining true 24-7 operation.

Drafted Python-based ADB data capture scripts to capture load information, processor speed, and thermal data. Cultivated a series of useful shell scripts to collect vital data from units on test. [dmesg, uptime, crash logs...]

Meggitt Avionics, Fareham, UK 2012 – 2016   Senior Hardware Design Engineer

Analysed initial hardware requirements and developed prototype system board to evaluate design. Took system level decisions and selected key components; Microcontroller (TMS570) + FPGA + DDR2 + NOR Flash + Display + Sensors + Buck regulators. Analysed system and determined best operating parameters: clock speeds, memory data rates and all other parameters affecting power and throughput. Performed HW wakeup and Supported device driver SW development. Performed calculations, measurement tests and debugging, in order to correctly verify the hardware modules including System, SPI, I2C, and UART. 

Created custom embedded SW (AVR 8-bit) to record RGB LED controller parameters, which was used to discover root cause of high manufacturing failure rate.

Devised, tested and released calibration improvements (PC app. Visual C) solving RGB LED high manufacturing failure rate issue.

Solved sensor data drifting, through filtering algorithms improvement.
