This position is located in the Division of Natural Resources. The Research Assistant reports to the Economic Affairs Officer and the Chief of the Water and Energy Unit.

This position is temporarily available until 29 September 2023.


Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Conducts literature review related to water and sustainable development for Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Researches, extracts and compiles information and technical data on water related issues (including water and sanitation, integrated water management, environmental concerns, etc.) for Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Sorts, consolidates, extracts and processes contact data, considering UN data protection practices.
  • Assists in monitoring of budget implementation and expected deliverables
  • Contributes to the organization of seminars and workshops, collecting, selecting, analysing, and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
  • Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
  • Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
  • Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.
  • Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
  • Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information.
  • Coordinates and sets up press briefings, press statements, pamphlets or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on any specific issue.
  • Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff.
  • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
  • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

Technical or vocational certificate in the field of economics, sustainability, engineering and/or public policy, with focus in water management, is desirable.

Work Experience

At least five (5) years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required.

Experience in natural resources/sustainability/water issues and/or engineering/economics research is required.

One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Spanish is a working language of ECLAC.

For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and fluency of Spanish is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.


NOTE:
'Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and 'knowledge'' equals a rating of ''confident'' or "fluent' in two of the four areas.
