About the Role:


The Global Portfolio Strategy and Development (PS&D) team, led by our Chief Development Officer, is made up of Business Development, M&A, Decision Evaluation, Strategy & Market Intelligence and Ventures.

Our primary purpose is to create long-term value by strengthening BHP's portfolio of assets and investment opportunities.

The Business Development team is responsible for growing BHP's exposure to highly attractive commodities through the origination, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and execution of targeted growth options and corporate M&A transactions on a global scale.

Our Minerals Americas-based Business Development team is also responsible for providing critical commercial and strategic advisory and support to the entirety of the Minerals Americas asset portfolio.


We are seeking an ambitious, motivated and global-minded individual with the tenacity, imagination and drive to deliver strategic investment advice and growth to BHP's portfolio.

This is an exciting opportunity to play an integral role on a global stage for one of the world's leading mining companies.


The focus of this role will be twofold: 1) on early-stage growth opportunities, with a particular emphasis on projects in future facing commodities such as copper, nickel and fertilizers, and 2) on providing commercial and strategic advisory support to our Minerals Americas asset portfolio, including Escondida, Pampa Norte, Jansen, and BHP's non-operated Joint Ventures (Antamina, Resolution, Samarco).


In this role, you will:

  • Maintain an overriding commitment to health and safety and BHP's charter values and Code of Conduct.
  • Contribute to our global business development strategy.
  • Provide critical commercial and strategic advisory and investment support for the entirety of the Minerals Americas portfolio.
  • Originate opportunities and lead internal and external teams to assess projects, develop business cases and communicate outcomes.
  • Lead commercial engagement and M&A execution activities for earlystage growth opportunities.
  • Build valueadding, sustainable relationships with key industry stakeholders.
  • Represent BHP at important industry events to position BHP as the preferred partner of choice, strengthen market engagement and generate proprietary market intelligence and deal flow.
  • Lead the drafting of Board Papers and briefing materials for the Executive Leadership Team, the CEO and the Board of Directors.
  • Travel regionally and globally.
The location of this position will be Santiago, Chile.


About You:

Education & Experience
- ~10 years of industry and transactional experience (direct investing or sell-side advisory) in corporate/business development, management/strategy consulting investment banking, private equity/debt, VC or hedge fund industry; preferably in the minerals industry

  • An undergraduate degree with a business/finance focus or technical/engineering background preferred
  • MBA or advanced degree is a plus
  • Knowledge of the minerals industry; understanding of geology, mining engineering, mineral processing and infrastructure is a plus, as well as experience in an operating business
  • Global mindset
  • English (mandatory), Spanish (highly desirable)

Attributes, Skills and Experience:


  • Proven track record in originating, evaluating, structuring, negotiating, executing and managing valueaccretive transactions and investments in the minerals industry (incl. indepth knowledge of the M&A process, term sheet drafting, review of legal documentation, project review requirements, and internal approvals processes), preferably at an international level
  • Proven project management experience in leading internal and external multidisciplinary teams (to include, technical, legal, financial, tax, external affairs, etc.)
  • Deep understanding of capital markets, corporate finance and accounting; experience with structured products across the entire capital structure is a plus (equity, debt, hybrid, streams, royalties, etc.)
  • Proven ability to identify and implement creative solutions and/or unique investment angles to complex deal constructs or competitive situations
  • Effective in managing and influencing multiple, senior and varied stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • Proven ability to develop strong relationships; existing networks of contacts in the industry is a plus
  • Exceptional writing, presentation and communication skills, with the ability to structure and present complex ideas and information in a sim
