  • About the Role
  • This role play a key role in representing BHP as a company ambassador with Indigenous and First Nations peoples, and community stakeholders across the Latam region.
  • Responsible for the development and delivery of the Company's strategic approach to Indigenous Engagement (IE) in Latam; including the land on which we operate, NOJVs, Legacy Assets or where we may operate in the future.
  • Key to this role is managing the complexity associated with establishing relationships with Indigenous peoples and other key stakeholders, developing a deep understanding of their expectations, priorities, evaluating the requirements for the Company, and leading a team to help grow BHP's presence whilst also helping effectively mitigate risks in this increasingly important space.
  • Oversee the establishment of the IE function and strategy execution to lift and lead BHP's ambition and performance in the increasingly business critical area of Indigenous rights, relationships and partnerships
  • Establish direction for and day to day management of the team including planning, budgeting and people development in alignment with the function
  • Act as a key strategic advisor on IE to the VP CA&C as well as other relevant MALT members, and Regional and Asset Leadership Teams
  • Accountable to drive the enhancement of culture and capability across IE team including establishing and monitoring staff performance and development goals
  • Externally represents BHP on IE matters with key and peers, industry, national and State Indigenous leaders, State and Federal governments, in public forums and where appropriate, the media
  • Accountable for the governance, negotiation and implementation of land use and benefits agreements with Indigenous people across the region
  • Accountable for the development and execution of the Indigenous components of the regions Social Investment Strategy
  • Contribute to the global review of BHP's commitments to and practices to embed free, prior and informed consent and work to drive review findings across the region as required
  • Manage the Company's regional approach for ensuring appropriate engagement and consultation with Indigenous peoples in the decisionmaking process as it relates to projects relating to exploration, acquisition or JV's partnerships


  • About You

  • Minimum Requirements:
  • Deep experience and expertise in engaging effectively with Indigenous peoples, communities and organizations and a working understanding of the issues and opportunities impacting these stakeholders.
  • Tertiary qualification in indigenous affairs, politics, economics, communications, business or related field is required.
  • Ability to engage and influencing at the most senior levels of the business and with external stakeholder to drive and lead change.
  • Ability to externally represent BHP on Indigenous engagement matters with peers, local, national and State Indigenous leaders, State and Federal governments, in public forums and where appropriate the media.
  • Exceptional decision making and judgement skills particularly in highly complex situations.
  • Proven experience in the implementation of participation and consultation processes.
  • Ability to deal with significant levels of ambiguity.
  • Deep understanding of legal frameworks as the relate to land use and benefits agreements and demonstrated expertise in agreement implementation and negotiation with Native Title groups.
  • Experienced and highly competent people leadership to lead and drive a highperformance culture.
  • Experience leading a team in a large, diverse businesses, preferably with a global/multigeographic footprint.
  • Understands operational, strategic and emerging risks and impacts, and anticipates emerging trends, across the lifecycle of our business.
  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy.
  • High levels of integrity and discretion in dealing with sensitive issues
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
