Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)


Main purpose of job:


The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is responsible for promoting UK trade and investment with the rest of the world.

Working within the British Embassy in Chile, as well as collaborating closely with DBT Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) and UK colleagues, the successful applicant will drive deeper trading relations between the UK and Chile, increasing UK exports and contributing to economic growth and jobs.


DBT Chile supports British exports to both private and public buyers across a number of sectors, with a particular focus on those that contribute to Clean Growth.

This role has overall responsibility within British Embassy Santiago for trade promotion work linked to Clean Growth, including infrastructure and energy - managing 3 trade promotion officers specialising in relevant sub-sectors.

You will be required to provide strategic steers and oversight for each sub-sector, ensuring collaborative and joined-up work to maximise impact and building a strategic pipeline of opportunities to increase UK Clean Growth exports.

This will also require close collaboration with other Embassy colleagues covering trade and economic policy, climate change and science and innovation in particular, identifying synergies and contributing to shared goals across the Mission as well as positioning UK companies for future commercial opportunities.


Roles and responsibilities:


  • Leadership of DBT Chile's core trade promotion work, with a particular focus on Clean Growth sectors sustainable infrastructure (including transport), sustainable mining (including critical minerals) and clean energy (including low carbon hydrogen).
  • Line management of 3 trade promotion officers with individual sector responsibilities, including ensuring a crossteam approach and knowledge sharing to maximise impact.
  • Support to the Country Director as a key part of the team's management, including deputising where required
  • Contribution to DBT's strategic approach to delivering commercial results and increasing UK exports to Chile and the region by supporting the creation of country and regional trade plans and activities.
  • Collaboration with other UK government departments within the Embassy and in the UK, to support their work on clean growth as appropriate to support future commercial opportunities for the UK.
  • Identifcation of key stakeholders in public and private sector (in Chile and the UK), and implementation of a strategy for building and maintaining important relationships to support commercial outcomes. Including attendance at networking events to represent DBT as necessary
  • Identifcation and delivery of opportunities to showcase UK business and build Chilean awareness of the UK's Clean Growth expertise, including through events, trade missions, visits and communications.
  • Support to senior management with information, reporting and briefing as required, facilitating official programmes, trade missions, webinars and events.
  • Engagement as a a flexible member of DBT and the wider Embassy team to support crossMission work as needed, including but not limited to crisis response.
  • Active participation in subregional (Andean) and regional DBT LATAC teams, supporting priority work in other sectors/markets where needed and proactively sharing knowledge and best practice to support the delivery of objectives across the region. Potential to lead strategic work on energy subsector as part of regional team, in due course.
  • Contributions to the corporate objectives of British Embassy Santiago and the Department for Business and Trade LATAC.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • 5 years work experience
  • Line management and/or leadership experience
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement and management
  • Excellent management and collaboration skills with the ability to deliver results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Language:

Spanish and English


Level of language required:
Fluent written and spoken (CEFR C1 essential; C2 in at least one language preferable)


Must have the legal status to live and work in Chile
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in clean growth related sector
  • Trade and/or investment experience
  • Experience of commercial work and account management
